Burnet boys soccer beats Florence to stay third in district
The Burnet High School boys soccer team defeated Florence 2-1 Feb. 20 to remain in third place in the District 25-4A standings.
That victory snapped a two-match losing streak where the Bulldogs (8-8, 4-3) lost to Austin Achieve 8-0 Feb. 16 and to Marble Falls 6-0 Feb. 13.
Head coach Benjamin Boorman noted the Mustangs are playing well.
“(We) succumbed to the same fate as all other district opponents this year as Marble Falls defeated (us) and stayed perfect in district play,” he said.
Still, he was pleased with the performances of a few of his players.
“Hector Arredondo had a stellar game as well as Miguel Valdez,” he said. “Derik Colis and Rigo Valdez played their hearts out, but the speed and precision of the Mustangs was just too much.”
The junior varsity lost to Marble Falls 5-1. Isaac Saldivar scored Burnet’s lone goal in the first half. The match was tied at 1-1 at the intermission.
“Isaac Saldivar scored a great goal and almost had the assist for the second as the shot went wide from his cross,” Boorman said. “Roberto Montoya was an animal in goal and made so many good saves.”
The Mustangs posted a shutout in the final 40 minutes.
“The boys ran out of juice in the second half,” the coach said. “A couple of goals were scored in the last five minutes of the game, but the Bulldogs fought hard.”
Burnet travels to Jarrell Friday, Feb. 23, with the junior varsity playing at 4 p.m. and the varsity at 7:30 p.m.
